7 Signs of a Suspension Problem

A healthy suspension provides smooth handling and safer driving. At the first indication of a suspension problem, you'll want to bring your vehicle to the shop for a thorough inspection so the issue can be identified and promptly addressed. Here's a look at seven signs of suspension trouble.

Drifting

Assuming you're driving within the speed limit, when you take sharp turns it shouldn't feel like you're drifting or swaying. However, if you do get this sensation, then suspension trouble could be brewing.

"Nose Diving" Sensation

If your shocks are shot, you might get the sense that your vehicle is thrusting forward at a downward trajectory when the brakes are engaged.

One Corner Looks Low

A damaged spring can cause a corner to sit lower. When this occurs, you may hear clunking sounds when you go over bumps.

Bumpy Driving

Suspension failure is likely to blame if it feels like you're driving over bumps when you can see that the pavement is actually smooth.

Doesn't Pass the Bounce Test

There's a quick and easy test that will help you figure out if your shocks/struts are shot. To start, be completely sure that your vehicle is securely parked and isn't liable to roll. Next, press down on the front end of your vehicle with all of your power. Rock it a couple of times and release. Then, head around back and repeat this process on the rear end. Upon letting go, your vehicle should only rock two or three times maximum. If it rocks more than this, then you have evidence of worn-out shocks/struts.

Visible Damage/Leaking

It's a good idea to occasionally conduct a quick visual inspection of your suspension. If you notice that your shocks are leaking, then they'll likely need to be replaced.

Bald Spots

Failing shocks/struts can cause tires to wear down unevenly, which can consequently result in the formation of bald spots.
